Mediation - Film Theorists

Stuart Hall, suggested that representation is the production of meaning through language ( a spoken or visual language) he implied that reality is mediated through the language.

Film language is as so, it is not necessarily the spoken language however the camera work but more the camera work and costume, we could watch a foreign film but understand the plot through the visuals and what the characters are doing.

Stuart Hall also stated he believed that media has no truth and people can manipulate reality and us as the audience get a mediated version of the truth, the hard truth is filtered through the media and then changed into a different perspective, the facts can be changed based on social/personal/political agendas.

Richard Dyer, implied that the role of stereotypes of how the complexity and diversity of a group or individual is reduced to a few limited characteristics, stereotypes exaggerate difference; this can create conflict between groups. The media may not create stereotypes; however they do reinforce them. Stereotyping is a way of imposing order on diversity by oversimplifying traits, stereotypes are a quick way of gathering information about a certain character. Seeing certain assumptions may help construct audience perception of the world. Identities can be constructed and can be communicated through stereotypes.

Unit 10 - Fictional Film Codes and Conventions

The two genres I have chosen for this assignment are Action and Horror. I feel that the choices I have made are suitable as they both feature iconography of the typical film in that genre. My chosen films for the genres are; Spectre and Kingsman: The Secret Service for the action movies; and the horror movies I have chosen are The Conjuring and IT, I believe that the choices I have made are necessary as they all feature typical codes and conventions of their genre. A theorist known as Steve Neale suggested that genre is made up of repetition and difference, as the viewers we can expect familiar sequences in the movies. Neale said that people are satisfied with repetition in film genres, the audience want to see similar codes and conventions within the movie to make it that recognizable genre. Neale’s idea of repetition can be seen in the two movies; Spectre and Kingsman: The Secret Service, the two both feature and share similarities with the action genre. Action films usually...

Film Evaluation

Genre: The genre for my film will be a thriller, i have chosen thriller as i enjoy the genre and have an understanding of the genre. i will be able to focus on the codes and conventions of this genre making my movie up to a quality standard. Costume: The costume for the film hasn't been to focused on as the costumes i wanted the characters to wear is what my actors would usually wear on a daily basis, this saved a lot of time during production as i didn't have to get the actors to go out and find the specific clothes. Film Title: Taking Chase Short Longline: Two young adults are caught in a drug deal and have to go on the run from the DEA, while on the run they discover something unusual. Characters: David ( Robert Halligan) Danny (Tom Anderson) Undercover Officer/Dean ( Joseph Simmons) Shooting Schedule- Mondays and Tuesdays - Off Campus - Some shots in the VPA Building Camera Angles- The camera angles i used were pretty basic, i tended to use long shots to capture...
