My second product I intend to release will be the Twitter page, I decided to use Twitter as it is a big social media platform and can get many viewers on one post, I also believe that it will be a great decision to use Twitter as its a fre...

challenging genres

Sub Genres - a sub genre is a genre within the genre itself, for example you can have a movie that fits in the horror genre; however it could be a slasher, paranormal or gore. A good example for this can be Friday the 13th for a slasher movie whereas Paranormal Activity fits into the paranormal section of sub genre.

Audience Decoding

The media purposely use men looking like this to entice the audience, a male will pick up the magazine thinking that if he reads and follows the magazine he will look like this. However this can be argued as some men will disagree with this and not want to strive for that look

Audience decoding - Roland Bathes

Roland Bathes said texts were either "open" or "closed". he suggested none were fully one or other; as there is always room for interpretation, however some texts attempt to restrict their meaning more than others. Some texts encourage polysemy and are open texts. Other texts discourage polysemy and are closed texts. The picture above shows an example of a closed text advert;

Media Stereotypes

Media stereotypes can have a heavy influence on the audience; for example some people who have power can take control and begin to stereotype certain groups through their ethnicity or gender. Most of stereotypes are shown through the likes of: Film, TV, Advertising, Video Games and Newspapers. These stereotypes are mediated through powerful people in the media.

Mediation - Film Theorists

Stuart Hall, suggested that representation is the production of meaning through language ( a spoken or visual language) he implied that reality is mediated through the language. Film language is as so, it is not necessarily the spoken language however the camera work but more the camera work and costume, we could watch a foreign film but understand the plot through the visuals and what the characters are doing.  Stuart Hall also stated he believed that media has no truth and people can manipulate reality and us as the audience get a mediated version of the truth, the hard truth is filtered through the media and then changed into a different perspective, the facts can be changed based on social/personal/political agendas. Richard Dyer, implied that the role of stereotypes of how the complexity and diversity of a group or individual is reduced to a few limited characteristics, stereotypes exaggerate difference; this can create conflict between groups. The media may not crea...

Unit 6 - Evaluation

Mitchell Dempsey  EVALUATION  For my task I had to create three media campaigns; the three media campaigns had to promote a chosen: Video game, TV/film, album or a product in the community. For my choice I decided on promoting the upcoming game Red Dead Redemption 2 by Rockstar Games. It  is an upcoming Western-themed action-adventure video game developed and published by Rockstar Games. It is scheduled to be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018, the reason I chose this is because I enjoy the game series and thought it would keep my interest within the project. For my first product I created a social media page on Twitter, the reason I chose Twitter is because I believe that it is one of the most popular social media platforms across the world; I backed this up by creating a survey to see what social media common folk use, the research showed that over 50% of the survey used Twitter and the other half were divided into different parts o...

Unit 6 Media Campaigns

Unit 6 media campaign All platforms would launch on July 1st this would help build suspense by having 2 months before the games release.  For the use of photoshop i created my billboard, i took images from google and placed them into the photoshop document, i used the magic wand tool to remove the background on images and also the free transform tool so i could make the images larger or smaller.

Crowdfunded films

Crowdfunded film- Da Sweet Blood of Jesus   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n739-zHeooQ This was a film that was directed by Spike Lee; He took the decision to crowdfund fund as no film studios were interested in putting there time into it which . Around 6,400 people backed the funding of this film, helping raise a total $1,418,910. The funding took around a month to complete, starting on the 22 nd July 2013 through August 21 st 2013.   The incentives offered for crowdfunding included spending a day with Spike Lee and the film editors, signed merchandise, bumper stickers, tickets to the film premiere and vintage pins.   Crowdfunded  film- Veronica Mars   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iksrM_LNZ6s Veronica Mars broke the record for the amount of donors backing this film project, totalling around 90,000 backers overall. The film raised $5,702,153 and the whole movie was funded. After having such a huge backing, the film was eventually given the seal of approval b...

Media - Male Gaze - Laura Mulvey

The male gaze is a theory suggested by Laura Mulvey, she suggested that the females portrayed in media all have a similar style of looks and a only there for the sex appeal of the heterosexual male audience; whether the viewer may be male or female the stars are always portrayed through the perspective of a heterosexual male.

Trump Election Media Reaction

The media reacted to Trump in different ways, some kept it quite serious like The Times.. unlike such newspapers The Sun or Liberation who took a more humorous approach to his election win, Liberation made a joke reference to the film American Psycho and stated that Trump was a "american psycho". The Sun also used the adult cartoon show The Simpsons to reference Trump, they stated that Trump was "predicted" to be President 20 years before it happened in The Simpsons.

Film Evaluation

Genre: The genre for my film will be a thriller, i have chosen thriller as i enjoy the genre and have an understanding of the genre. i will be able to focus on the codes and conventions of this genre making my movie up to a quality standard. Costume: The costume for the film hasn't been to focused on as the costumes i wanted the characters to wear is what my actors would usually wear on a daily basis, this saved a lot of time during production as i didn't have to get the actors to go out and find the specific clothes. Film Title: Taking Chase Short Longline: Two young adults are caught in a drug deal and have to go on the run from the DEA, while on the run they discover something unusual. Characters: David ( Robert Halligan) Danny (Tom Anderson) Undercover Officer/Dean ( Joseph Simmons) Shooting Schedule- Mondays and Tuesdays - Off Campus - Some shots in the VPA Building Camera Angles- The camera angles i used were pretty basic, i tended to use long shots to capture...

Daily's Production Part Two

When i was shooting i couldn't really book out rooms as at the times they were busy to record shots, when i could use the rooms i wanted i used my time wisely and got the shots i needed; within the time i had i managed to capture some of my shots as you can see from my previous post. The camera was easy to use but i had problems trying to get it to focus on some shots and also keeping it steady when i couldn't get a tripod to use for my shots.

Dailies - Film Production

Film Editing

After i had shot all my film, i put it together in Adobe Premiere Pro, i chose Premiere Pro as it is an easy software to cut and edit footage. The footage i got could all be put into Premiere Pro and then i could drag it onto the movie timeline; after it has been dragged into the timeline i could cut little things out that were flaws in the footage and also clip shots together. Some shots i added music into my movie, the music i used was from youtube which i referenced in my music sheet. The music was simple to put in as i could cut to the part i wanted then drag it to the section of the movie it was being used. The audio was simple as i could turn up the decibels making it more louder and clear for the audience to hear. I could also clip different camera shots together making it into editing techniques; for example i could use two pieces of footage to make it look like a shot reverse shot.

Unit 10 - Fictional Film Codes and Conventions

The two genres I have chosen for this assignment are Action and Horror. I feel that the choices I have made are suitable as they both feature iconography of the typical film in that genre. My chosen films for the genres are; Spectre and Kingsman: The Secret Service for the action movies; and the horror movies I have chosen are The Conjuring and IT, I believe that the choices I have made are necessary as they all feature typical codes and conventions of their genre. A theorist known as Steve Neale suggested that genre is made up of repetition and difference, as the viewers we can expect familiar sequences in the movies. Neale said that people are satisfied with repetition in film genres, the audience want to see similar codes and conventions within the movie to make it that recognizable genre. Neale’s idea of repetition can be seen in the two movies; Spectre and Kingsman: The Secret Service, the two both feature and share similarities with the action genre. Action films usually...
